Why Representation Matters?

Representation matters because for too long, people of color have not had proper representation in the media, in government, and in professional spaces. People of color have been painted as ignorant and impoverished individuals needing saving and intervention from their white counterparts. This is the furthest thing from the truth and the reality of thousands of people of color in America and beyond.

Regardless of color, most people want the same things…..security, love, safety, education, and their basic needs met. However in striving for the aforementioned needs, what if you had to contend with preconceived notions of who you are. What if your passion was perceived as hostility?

Many women of color, specifically black women due to improper representation have to fight against an imaginary giant. I call it imaginary because of the images held in the minds of others… these individuals imagine them as less than, angry, needy, poor, uneducated and the list goes on. However, women of color in America and beyond have made great strides and have contributing to the advancement of our societies. This weekend the world got to witness the first woman of color be elected into one of America’s highest office. What a time to be alive!

Let’s take a moment to celebrate this win, it is major! Little girls and boys all over America now have a face that can recognize themselves in….. and it is The Well Read Child Book Fairs core belief that every child deserves to see themselves in the books they read… positively represented in the media and even in The White House.
